ABOUT WYOMING
HOUNDSMEN ASSOCIATION
MISSION & HISTORY.
The Wyoming Houndsmen Association is a 501c4 organization that is dedicated to promote, protect, and preserve the right to freecast dogs in the state of Wyoming for the present and future houndsmen, while maintaining proper management of mountain lions, bobcats, and other pursuable game.
WHA was founded in 2022 by houndsmen who wanted to make sure our great sport not only survived but flourished in the state of Wyoming. It is now comprised of a multifaceted group of sportsmen and women from across the state with the goal to promote the values and ethics of hunting with the use of hounds.
Often it seems that there is a disconnect between our society today and the nature and land that surrounds us causing many to misunderstand the traditions and values of hunting with hounds or the working dog in general. For thousands of years working dogs have protected our homes, livestock, and have helped feed families. They are companions and reliable friends in the hardest of times. The houndsmen and women who raise these hounds spend countless hours training them and establishing bonds that are like no other relationship. For the true houndsmen, it is a lifestyle that consumes a significant part of their lives. It is more than just the chase; these dogs mean a lot more to them than that. It’s about the deep connections formed between man and dog, the wildlife, and the land around us.
Together, we’re preserving a heritage that has been around for generations, we’re fostering a deeper appreciation for the outdoors, and contributing to the well-being of the wildlife we hunt. WHA strives to educate others on the ethics and sportsmanship of hound hunting through public awareness, youth involvement, and community. WHA not only defends a time-honored tradition of hound hunting, but also works with Wyoming Game and Fish and State Legislature to aid in the management and conservation of mountain lions, bob cats, and other game animals within the state. Join our community and help make a difference in the fight to keep hound hunting alive for ourselves and for those who follow in our footsteps.
